If your children use pools, you must read this.

Update: I have forwarded this link to some of my co-workers and received the following reply from one of them: "My friend's daughter died from this. She was 17, 5'7" 160 pounds, not just children need to be careful."
You can be sure that your local Jewish pool wont care.
ReplyDeleteThen one shouldn't patronize it. Plus, it's a law. I am sure there are fines associated with non-compliance and mandatory shut down.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if pools in Jewish camps have this kind of suction drain systems. I'm about to become officially known as the most paranoid mother in Flatbush (I think I pretty much was one all along but it wasn't official). Can you just see the camp coordinator's reaction when I'll be inquiring what kind of covers they have on their pool drains?
ReplyDeleteYou know, everyone should have a mother like you. Seriously. Better to be a bit overprotective, possibly embarrassing oneself and in this case demand that a federal law be followed than regret something terrible later. It's one thing to allow your kids to get a few scrapes on their knees... another one completely is to disregard real danger.
ReplyDeleteWow, I love you SubWife! I was never complimented before on being paranoid. In fact it rather annoys most.
ReplyDeleteIn the case of safe drain covers, I'm worried that whoever I might ask won't have the slightest clue what I'm talking about.
Yeah, I was wondering about that too. What if you find out (after lots of painful researcH) that the camp not only doesn't have special covers, but also has little intention of ever obtaining them (or will obtain them too late in the summer season to make a difference), what would you do? Would you not send your kids to camp? Or would they be the only ones not allowed to swim?
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, YOU LOVE ME! YOU LOVE ME! I KNEW IT!
What puzzles me is why there isn't a greater incidence of this sort of mishap? I had assumed that the pool-drain covers were mandated years ago (when I first heard of this problem) - I'm shocked to hear there was no law on the books until recently.
